Man injured at hazardous outdoor event
Before winter approaches, people in Massachusetts may be enjoying their last outdoor parties and picnics of the season. Outdoor events can be fun, but they can also involve safety risks that leave event organizers liable for injuries. One man in New Jersey had to undergo surgery after attending a company picnic hosted by his wife’s employer. The New Jersey man was injured after using a bungee-trampoline device that event organizers had rented to entertain their guests. While wearing a harness attached to bungee cords, the man was lifted into the air and then encouraged to jump on the trampoline. As the man descended to the trampoline base, the device operator lifted him into the air before his feet touched the trampoline, which caused his left arm to take the full force of his jump. As a result of the bungee-trampoline accident, the man suffered from a ruptured tendon and a hyperextension injury that left him in severe pain. He required surgery and physical therapy that cost around $8,500. After suing the equipment rental company, device manufacturer and venue, the man and his wife were awarded $307,500 in a settlement. According to the plaintiffs, the device did not have necessary warnings or instructions, and the device operator was not adequately trained to use the device. When a person is injured in an accident involving an attraction or amusement park ride on commercial property, there are usually multiple parties with liability. A lawyer may be able to help an injured person to pursue monetary compensation from all of the liable parties by filing a personal injury claim.
