Choosing the Proper Auto Insurance

Before driving any vehicle on Massachusetts roads, you need to have the proper insurance coverage. If you are a motorcyclist, there are a number of special insurance considerations that apply to you. Perhaps the most important thing you can do as a motorcycle rider is to choose your insurance right away, even before riding the bike for the first time.

Understanding Your Insurance Options

There are many things to think about when considering purchasing motorcycle insurance. If you are involved in a motorcycle accident, you need to make sure you and your family are protected. In Massachusetts, some of the options are:

Minimum coverage: The state minimum requirements for motorcycle insurance coverage are:

  • Bodily injury to others: Minimum $20,000 per person, $40,000 per accident
  • Personal injury protection (PIP): Pays up to $8,000 to the policy holder, plus any passengers, pedestrians or anyone else allowed to use the motorcycle
  • Bodily injury caused by an uninsured auto: Minimum $20,000 per person, $40,000 per accident

Medical payments coverage: This covers the driver and passenger, and no one else. It is very useful because you may have to reimburse your health insurer for payments they make to you, and no-fault insurance alone may not be sufficient.

Underinsured and uninsured motorist coverage:
This is the most important type of insurance you can have. No one can be forced to buy insurance, so there are some drivers who choose to drive without any insurance, putting themselves and others at risk. If the person who hits you does not have insurance, or does not have enough to cover your entire claim, you can seek compensation from your own insurance company if you have underinsured/uninsured motorist coverage.

Our attorneys can provide guidance to motorcyclists and other motorists to help them choose the insurance that is most appropriate for them. Getting the coverage you need does not have to be expensive. With our help, you can get cost-effective coverage that meets all your needs.
